What Young People Should Know About Socialism – Part 1

In some ways it is truly amazing how many people seem to believe in some form of socialism. But in other ways it is understandable when you consider how many young people are so misguided because of the misinformation they receive.

Socialism’s long history of failures is often hidden from students because “utopian political movements seldom reference antecedents. They advance by covering their own tracks. And they cynically appeal to emotions, inflaming the envy and misplaced sense of justice that drive demands for the redistribution of wealth. Of course, the practical pursuit of redistribution usually ends up enthroning a mostly well-to-do intellectual elite who enlarge the powers of the state and advance their own social and economic status.” [emphasis added. quote from here]

Despite its history, socialism is still advocated by three main groups: sheltered academics, multimillionaires in the media, and impressionable youth. If you ask young people how many were killed by the Nazis, they can instantly give you the standard 6 million number. But when asked about the numbers who were murdered under communism, they cannot give a figure anywhere near the truth (the best estimates are in the neighborhood of 80-100 million). Why? Because of the alleged noble goals of communism - even though, like communism, Nazism was a form of socialism. This is not meant to diminish the evils of Nazism, but the evils of communism should not be diminished either. Both sought “social justice” and “equality” - the same goals that American progressives seek, and chillingly even top officials who are and were in the Obama administration.
