Senator Arlen Specter is officially defecting to the Democrats. This is really not surprising since he was pretty much a RINO and voted more with Democrats than he did his own ex-party. Of course the main reason he is switching sides is because of the fact that Pat Toomey would crush him in the primary. Specter’s stated reason for switching is a total lie. He said, “Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right.” Huh? I’d like him to give an example of Republicans having “moved far to the right.” I don’t know what country he’s been living in, but too many Republicans have been acting like Democrats, which means they moved too far to the left, and why they lost the election.
Just recently, in a March 17 interview he said, “I am staying a Republican because I think I have an important role, a more important role, to play there. The United States very desperately needs a two-party system. That’s the basis of politics in America. I’m afraid we are becoming a one-party system, with Republicans becoming just a regional party with so little representation of the northeast or in the middle Atlantic. I think as a governmental matter, it is very important to have a check and balance. That’s a very important principle in the operation of our government. In the constitution on Separation of powers.” So I guess he no longer worries about becoming a one-party system and thinks it’s safe to switch sides? Apparently Specter has been talking with the Democrats about this for months, and I’m sure his defection will be well rewarded assuming he doesn’t lose in the 2010 Democratic primary.
At least Michael Steele told it like it is by saying, “Let’s be honest-Senator Specter didn’t leave the GOP based on principles of any kind. He left to further his personal political interests because he knew that he was going to lose a Republican primary due to his left-wing voting record.”
Perhaps it’s for the best - the GOP will be ridding itself of a RINO only concerned with his own career, and a traitor to traditional American values and principles. He’d make a great Democrat.

This guy is what is wrong with our system…if he wants to switch parties that is fine he should give up his office. He was elected as a Rep. and he has just disenfranchised all of those citizens that voted for him due to that fact. This career politico is feeling his window closing and he is doing everything he can to continue his career…now he has resorted to a party change, so weak. Would he be changing out if it came with giving up his power? Would he be changing parties if it meant giving up his seat? They should be allowed to change parties, but X months prior to election and that is it! He can give his dissenting voice by having the gonads to vote against his friends and his party. Mr. Specter, give it up. You have had your turn in the game and your record will be your grade, history and the public will judge if you did more good than bad. What you are doing is pathetic and is one more black mark on public servants. You should be ashamed of yourself.
