Chicago Mayor Vows to Fight Against Second Amendment Rights

Following the Supreme Court’s recent Second Amendment decision, the mayor of Chicago vowed to keep the city’s 30-year old ban on handguns. Mayor Richard M. Daley said officials are working to rewrite the city ordinance in accordance with the new ruling while protecting Chicago residents from gun violence. But if he were serious about protecting people from gun violence, he’d either remove the bad people or arm the good people.

“We will never give in to those who use guns to harm others,” Daley said in comments directed at his supporters and fellow gun-grabbers. “Your fight is my fight and we’re in this together.”

His bizarre statement suggests that the new ruling somehow arms criminals. Those who “use guns to harm others” are generally called felons and are already barred from legal gun ownership. Stranger yet is how Daley defended the ban in light of recent shootings in his town, but if the ban worked then how could there be shootings?

Liberty-minded folk shouldn’t start celebrating yet, as there are numerous other ways to infringe on the Second Amendment. From registrations, licenses, fees, trigger locks, gun insurance, and storage requirements, they will find some way to keep you from protecting yourself and your family — usually by making it prohibitively expensive.

Progressives in America have a great deal of contempt toward the Constitution, except when it suits their purposes. An example is abortion, which is considered a right (that emanates from hidden penumbras) and sacrosanct, where no restrictions are tolerated. However, an actual enumerated right the Founders put in place they try to destroy by countless regulations and more. Even an AP article on the ruling noted that “some limitations on the Constitution’s “right to keep and bear arms” could survive legal challenges.”

Whether it is Daley or Obama, gun-grabbers everywhere are sure to use every ploy imaginable to destroy rights they don’t agree with. For those unfortunate enough to live in places like Chicago, look for draconian restrictions just shy of an outright ban. Then expect the logical consequences of those restrictions, namely the same amount of violence and murder that Chicago currently has compared to areas without mayors like Daley.
